CLERMONT, Fla. - The Iowa Lakes softball team dropped its season openers Saturday morning in Clermont, Fla.
The Lakers lost 9-0 to Burlington Community College in game one and 16-8 to Bethel JV in game two.
Morgan Vlasman led the Lakers on the day, going 2-3 with a walk. Morgan Zollner was 3-6 with a double, a sacrifice bunt and three RBIs and Alexandria Frausto went 2-4.
Frausto was the losing pitcher in both games. She gave up 20 earned runs, walked 11 and struck out five.
"Both teams we faced today were on the back end of their spring trips, having played 15 games already," said Iowa Lakes coach Jessica Van Loy. "We came in after a long travel day a little sluggish. We have some little things to correct, but I am happy with the progress we made from game one to game two."
On Monday, Iowa Lakes dropped two more games.
Iowa Lakes lost 11-5 to Bethany College (W.V.). Frausto took the loss as she gave up nine hits, four walks and eight earned runs. Jordyn Derflinger entered in relief in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded as the Lakers got at of the inning.
After that, she gave up two earned runs on four hits and a walk.
At the plate, Zollner was 3-4 with two doubles, Amber Holmgren was 2-4 with two RBIs. Amber Grengs was 2-3.
Iowa Lakes lost to Dakota County (Minn.) 8-4 in the second game.
Derflinger took the loss as she gave up three earned runs on eight hits and five walks.
Zollner led the Lakers going 2-3 at the plate, Christina Tendal was 2-4 and Jessica Abrahamson was 1-1.
"We showed improvements today, but this is still not the outcome we have been working for," said VanLoy. "Our pitchers have been working hard, we need to clean up the defense behind them to keep us in the game."
Iowa Lakes (0-4 overall) plays today at 1 p.m. against Riverland Community College (Minn.) and at 5 p.m. against Highland Community College (Ill.).
