Amanda Christensen, 10, daughter of Craig and Susan Christensen of Estherville, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Iowa Pageant to be held April 13-14 at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo.
Amanda had an interview in Sioux City Saturday, March 2 in which she was selected as a state finalist.
The National American Miss pageants are held for girls ages 4-18 and have five age divisions. Amanda will participate in the pre-teen age division, along with other girls from across Iowa.
The winner of the pageant will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses and air transportation to compete in the national pageant in California where she will receive a complimentary tour of Hollywood and two V.I.P. tickets to Disneyland.
The National American Miss Pageants are dedicated to celebrating America's future leaders and equipping them with lifelong skills. Each year the pageant nationally awards $1.5 million in cash, scholarships and other prizes, which include a new Ford Mustang convertible.
All activities and competitions are kept age-appropriate. Girls under 12 are not allowed to wear makeup and there is no swimsuit competition. The pageant program is based on inner beauty as well as developing self-confidence, learning good sportsmanship and setting and achieving personal goals. The pageant recognizes the accomplishments of each girl while encouraging her to set goals for her future.

Her sponsors include Henry-Olson Funeral Home, Mark and Sara More, Estherville Drug, Greg Williams DDS and State Farm Insurance.
Susan said the pageant competition includes a personal interview, oral presentation, ball gown, academic achievement, volunteer service and community involvement.
"It's not your typical beauty pageant," Susan said. "It's based on the person."
She said Amanda will give a 30-second presentation to everyone present at the convention center.
