Former Avera Holy Family Hospital nurse Judy McQuown joined an august and select group Sunday in Des Moines when she was named one of the 100 Great Nurses of Iowa.

McQuown was again recognized by her peers Monday at the Avera Holy Family Hospital cafeteria. She was joined by three other Holy Family nurses who have received the same award - Ruth Sloniker, Annesley Gunderson and Jan Schacherer. Also receiving the award previously but not able to attend was Cathi Scharnberg.

"It was just real overwhelming to see that many people support the nursing profession," McQuown said of the 900 persons present. "It was just nice that people appreciate the amount of effort that goes into the nursing profession. I just feel very honored to represent the profession."

McQuown was nominated by the Avera Nurse Leaders Group and Christy Mintah, quality RN, wrote her recommendation. McQuown learned that she had been selected March 1. The 100 winners were selected from 500-600 applicants.

Mintah said McQuown was recommended not only for her professional nursing skills but also her ability to mentor and lead.

McQuown did her LPN training at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1968-69 and completed her RN at Iowa Lakes Community College in 1988, with 43 years in the nursing profession.

When she started as an LPN, she was paid $2 an hour. One of her jobs was to wash rubber gloves and resterilize needles.

"There was nothing thrown away," she explained. "I thought I was sitting on top of the world."

McQuown retired from Avera Holy Family Hospital in January.
