Emmet County Democrats convened Saturday at the Iowa Lakes Community College auditorium to select Phyllis Martens to represent their party in the July 4 special election for county recorder.

Martens is running to fill the seat vacated by Sue Snyder, also a Democrat, who resigned her position as recorder effective April 29. Other Democrats indicating their interest in the position were Dave Grussing and Brenda Moore.

Martens said she was born and raised in Emmet County and graduated from Estherville High School and attended Iowa Lakes Community College. She said she has been in public accounting for 29 years, is proficient in technology and has mastered many software applications, electronically filing forms with federal and state agencies.

Martens and her husband, Mike, Emmet County sheriff, have two daughters, Leah and Molly.

Candidates nominated by county convention are exempt from having to gather signatures and file petitions.

Candidates who wish to run independently of party endorsement must file petitions with a minimum of 75 signatures of qualified Emmet County electors by 5 p.m. Friday, May 10.
