BANCROFT, POCAHONTAS - North Union wrapped up the first week of July with a pair of victories. The Warriors rallied to defeat Pocahontas Area 5-4 on Tuesday and then shut out Manson-Northwest Webster 10-0 in six innings on Wednesday.
North Union needed some late-game heroics to defeat Pocahontas.
Trailing 4-3 entering the top of the seventh, No. 9 batter Jake Adams led off with a double. Cody Runksmeier laid down a bunt to move the tying run to third base and then stole second base.
Adams came home as Colin Runksmeier grounded out to second base. Sawyer Doocy then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the inning, the Warriors retired the Indians in order. Cody Runksmeier pitching in relief of starter Corey Vaske, struck out the final batter to end the game and get the win. Runksmeier gave up one hit, struck out three batters and walked one in two innings of work. Vaske pitched five innings and gave up four earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
North Union had seven hits. Garret Johnson was 2-2; Spencer Ricke was 1-4 with two RBIs; Cody Runksmeier and Adams each were 1-3, Doocy was 1-2 with an RBI and Colin Runksmeier and Brandon Kollasch each had an RBI.
Against Manson-Northwest Webster, North Union scratched out a few runs in five of the six innings, ending the game with a three-run sixth inning.
Doocy pitched all six innings for the Warriors and gave up two hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
North Union finished with nine hits with Cody Runksmeier going 4-5 with three RBIs. Kollasch was 1-3 with three RBIs while Johnson was 1-2 with an RBI; Jake Govern was 1-2; and Spencer Ricke and Colin Runksmeier each were 1-4 with an RBI.
North Union (21-8 overall) hosts Forest City on Monday.
The Warriors host West Fork in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
