Supervisors correct assessment for Wallingford resident

The Emmet County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a request to correct an assessment in Wallingford.

County assessor Barb Bohm had requested the correction on behalf of Jeremy Bodle who bought a property in Wallingford in June 2012 - six months after a house had been demolished on the land in December 2011.

Bohm asked the board to allow her to petition to correct the assessment to a bare lot for the 2012 tax year.

The board approved the change as well as a three-year lease renewal with Rudi Abel and Phil Thelen for the building where the Iowa Department of Human Services is located. The county pays the lease and is reimbursed for part of the cost by the state.

In presenting the new lease, Abel said the last increase was for $100 in October 2007. Noting increases in insurance and electricity, Abel requested an increase of 3 percent or $51 a month which includes utilities.

"Every time you turn around, everything's going up," Abel explained.

The board approved the new lease for $1,742 a month.

The board also approved paying $500 to the Iowa Drainage District Association legal fund. The fund was established to help drainage districts deal with litigation.

County engineer Roger Patocka also presented the engineer's report, much of which focused on a letter Patocka drafted to Union Pacific, asking the railroad to repair several rail crossings in the county.

Patocka said his greatest concern was for the Wallingford crossing where the county is planning an asphalt overlay up to the track. Patocka, estimating the cost of repairing the crossing at $20,000, suggested that the county might ask the railroad to share half the cost.

Patocka also presented the board with drawings of a proposed 44-by-50 addition to the Armstrong shop.
