ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for L. Dean Higgins, 86, of Estherville will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at United Methodist Church in Estherville with Pastor Lynn Elrod officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville with military rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.
He died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
Leslie Dean Higgins, the son of Ray and Alice (Huss) Higgins, was born March 16, 1927, in Corning.
Dean graduated from Prescott High School in 1943. He attended and graduated from AIB Business College in Des Moines. Dean served in the United States Army during World War II and the German Occupation.
On Oct. 23, 1949, he married Carol Ruth Kisner in Des Moines. Though they agreed to disagree on almost everything they remained united in love for each other and their families.
The couple made their home in Des Moines. Dean loved numbers and worked as a bookkeeper until 1971 when they moved to Estherville. Dean continued as a public accountant for many years. Doing taxes remained his favorite pastime when he wasn't playing bridge, square dancing or traveling with his wife, Carol
He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville, Methodist Men and the VFW.
Left to cherish Dean's memory are his wife, Carol, at Good Samaritan in Estherville; daughters Colleen Higgins of Wellman and Bonnie Higgins of Belleville, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Karen Van Kooten; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and sister, Betty Anderson, of Des Moines.
